Tinubu Approves New University in Ogoniland

On Monday, in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu signed into law a bill that establishes the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Rivers State and promised additional support for the Ogoni community.

This was revealed in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy).

The university will be located in Ogoni town of Tai.

During the signing ceremony at the State House, President Tinubu stated that the creation of the university would enhance opportunities for Ogoni citizens and boost participation in development.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our national journey towards environmental justice, education and sustainable development.”

The President emphasized that the Ogoni people have long been active in national development efforts and have endured serious environmental damage.

“It is more than the creation of a university. It is the reaffirmation of our unwavering commitment to the people of Ogoni, the Niger Delta and the entire nation as a whole.”

He acknowledged that for decades, the Ogoni people have led efforts for environmental restoration and sustainable development, significantly shaping discussions at both national and global levels.

“By signing this bill into law, we are taking a decisive step towards addressing historical grievances and creating new opportunities for learning, growth and prosperity,” he stated.

The President confirmed that the university will “serve as a centre of excellence, equipping young Nigerians with the knowledge and skill to tackle present environmental challenges, drive clean energy solutions and contribute to our national sustainable economic development.”

President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the National Assembly, particularly the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives, for thoroughly reviewing the bill.

“Let me also commend the Ogoni delegation. Your steadfast advocacy for justice is encouraging. It will be rewarded, I assure you.”

Looking ahead, he called on stakeholders, traditional institutions, the academic community, the private sector, partners, and youth to support the university as a “beacon of knowledge, unity and progress.”

“Together, we will ensure that it will not only fulfil its mandate but also stand as a catalyst for transformational development across the country,” the President said.

Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, stated that the university would focus on interdisciplinary programmes in environmental science, clean energy, and sustainable technology, ensuring students are well-prepared to address both regional and national ecological concerns.

Malam Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser, remarked that the establishment of the university would help resolve longstanding issues and efforts to rehabilitate Ogoniland.

He stressed the importance of prioritizing Ogoniland in plans for inclusive development and environmental sustainability.

Senator Mpigi Barinada, head of the Ogoni delegation, expressed gratitude to the President for approving the bill to establish the Federal University of Environment and Technology.

He also acknowledged the key roles played by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and NSA Ribadu in advancing the bill’s approval.

Barinada noted that the creation of the university would bring hope to the Ogoni community and serve as a motivation to “shield the sword” and embrace peace.
