SAZU ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), Bauchi, has announced a comprehensive and indefinite strike in pursuit of their demands from the university management.

The decision was reached on Friday, 29 November 2024, during an emergency congress held at the university’s Yuli Campus in Bauchi.

Speaking to journalists, the ASUU Chairperson, Comrade Awwal Hussain Nuhu, outlined that the strike was the outcome of resolutions made at the congress.

He explained that the congress had conducted a review of the branch’s outstanding demands, with the process involving input from the NEC visitation team. The review assessed the extent of progress made on their demands by the university management.

The chairperson highlighted that the congress identified a lack of genuine commitment from both the university administration and the government to address their concerns, despite numerous attempts to engage them constructively.

According to Nuhu, the union had exhausted all avenues for resolving the issues but had been met with inaction from the authorities.

As a result, a motion was put forward during the congress for the branch to begin a “total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike.” This motion was seconded by another member and subsequently passed by the congress.

“The congress passed a resolution for the branch to embark on a comprehensive and indefinite strike until further notice,” Nuhu said.

He further announced, “The strike action commenced immediately at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, 29 November 2024. All members of ASUU at SAZU are directed to comply. No academic activity or meeting of any kind will take place during this period.”

The chairperson reiterated that “members are directed to embark on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike until further notice. This includes the suspension of all activities such as teaching, marking, meetings, accreditation, and any other duties related to academic staff.”
