Reps request a two-week extension for UTME registration from JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has been directed by the House of Representatives to extend the registration period for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) by a period of two weeks.

The resolution came after Rep. Hassan Shinkafi (PDP-Zamfara) adopted a motion of urgent public interest during Thursday’s session in Abuja.

“Need to extend UTME registration by JAMB” is the title of the motion.

Mr. Shinkafi moved the motion, stating that the UTME registration period ran from January 15, 2024, to February 26, 2024.

He added that as a result of the painful economic situation in the country, “Many families have been constrained from registering their wards by this timeline.”

The lawmaker said that if JAMB did not give an extension, many candidates would not be able to register and participate in the exercise.

According to him, there may not be wider coverage and participation in the 2024 UTME in Nigeria.

He urged the lawmakers to intervene, adding that an extension would encourage parents of less privileged students to register their wards for the exercise.

Adopting the motion, the House urged JAMB to extend the registration by two weeks, while mandating the relevant committees on Education and Legislative Compliance to enforce strict compliance.(NAN)
