Student, Trader Sentenced to 6 Months for Firearms Possession
A Magistrates’ Court in Jos on Monday sentenced a 17-year-old student and a 23-year-old trader, Daniel Abok, to six months in a correctional facility for the unlawful possession of firearms.
Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos summarily tried and sentenced the defendants following their guilty pleas to the charge.
In his ruling, Bokkos offered the convicts the option of paying a fine of N10,000 each to avoid serving the six-month term in the correctional facility.
Prosecutor Insp. Ijuptil Thiawur had earlier informed the court that the case was brought to their attention on October 24 by officers of the “C” Divisional Police Command.
Thiawur stated that the police acted on credible public information regarding the convicts’ activities.
“After a search, a locally made gun and ammunition were recovered from them,” the prosecutor explained.
The offence, according to Thiawur, is in violation of the Plateau Penal Code Law.
