NUC Hosts Nigerian Folklore Society Conference

The National Universities Commission (NUC) hosts the 5th Annual Congress and 14th yearly conference of the Nigerian Folklore Society (NFS) this Monday at the Abdulkarim Auditorium, NUC, Maitama, Federal Capital Territory Abuja.

 The two-day congress and conference, according to the secretary-general of NFS, Prof. Sani Abba Aliyu of the Department of English and Literary Studies, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and the public relations officer of NFS, Prof. A.K. Babajo, will witness several academic papers on the conference’s main theme, “Resilience and Dynamism in Folklore in the 21st Century” and its sub-themes each day at 10am.  

Executive Secretary of NUC Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed is the chief host of the event, which will be chaired by Nigeria’s ambassador to Egypt and Eritrea, Prof. Emeritus Dandatti Abdulkadir.

President of NSF Prof. Bukar Usman, OON, is the host of the occasion, while the director-general, National Council for Arts and Culture, Otunba Olusegun Rusewe, will deliver the keynote address.

 Commissioned presenters at the conference are the vice-chancellor, Kwara State University, Malete, Prof. Abdulrashid N’Allah, and Prof. Afam Ebeogu of the Department of English Language and Literature, Abia State University, Uturu.

 Also, the editor-in-chief of The Dream Daily Newspapers, Abuja, Mr Osigbesan Sultan Luqman, will present a research paper titled “The Matriarchs Strike Back: Women, Courtship and Marriage Vows in Senwele Folklore,” in which he would explore gender relations in the Yoruba cosmos through the folkloric music of the popular Ilorin-based northern Nigerian Senwele singer, Hajiya Hawawu Alake-Adisa, who performs under the stage name Iyaladunke.
