Ghanaian students emerge with best results in 2023 WASSCE

Ghanaian students achieved the best three results in the 2023 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The exam was administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to all final-year secondary school students in its five member countries: Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Liberia, and Nigeria.

A total of 2,327,342 students took the exam, with Nigeria accounting for 1,613,733, comprising more than 70% of the total number of candidates.

All three Ghanaian students with the top results are boys, with two attending the same school, St James Seminary Senior High School (SHS).

They are Amo-Kodieh Leonard Kofi (first prize), Dzandu Selorm (second prize), and Asenso-Gyambibi Daniel (third prize).

The trio were unveiled at the council’s recently finished 72nd Annual General Meeting in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and were each awarded the WAEC International Excellence Award for their remarkable performance in the sub-regional test.

Similarly, the Augustus Bandele Oyediran Award for the best candidate in the exam went to the overall winner, Ghana’s Amo-Kodieh Leonard Kofi, while two Sierra Leonean candidates, Mammah Raymonda and Bangura Joshua, received the National Distinction Award, first and second respectively, and another student, Fillie Sahr Edward, received the National Merit Award, all at the event.

Mr Demianus Ojijeogu, the head of public affairs at WAEC International, made this remark in a statement released to Nigerian journalists on Sunday.

He stated that WAEC had now elected Prof Thomas Brima Rick.

Yormah, the former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Fourah Bay College and former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone, will be the forum’s 21st Chairman, succeeding Ghana’s Prof Ato Essuman.

According to Ojijeogu, Sierra Leone’s President, Retired Brigadier Julius Maada Bio, who was represented by Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, opened the meeting and praised WAEC for its high position among global examining bodies.

He promised his government’s continuous commitment to cooperate and collaborate with the organisation in any areas of mutual benefit.

Ojijeogu said the annual council meeting is on a rational basis among the five-member countries.
