No less than 5,043 secondary school students in Ogun State have been taught how to use an abacus counting machine to answer addition and subtraction problems, allowing them to beat the global record.
The event, hosted by the International Academy For The Gifted (IAGIFTED) in partnership with the Ogun State Government, took place at Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, wife of Ogun State governor, gave an insight into the programme, saying it was imperative to encourage learners to use abacus skills for mathematical calculations, noting that it would not only allow them to compete favourably with their peers in other countries of the world, but would also “take our educational system to a higher pedestal.”
Mrs. Bamidele noted that Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) education is only essential tool for personal and professional development for driving innovation and economic goals, hence the reason for Prince Dapo Abiodun-led government’s commitment towards ensuring that every child have access to effective STEAM teaching.
The Ogun State First Lady described education as the key to unlocking the potentials of the youths and empowering them to become agents of change in the society.
Mrs. Abiodun said; “I extend my heartfelt thanks to the organiser of this very special programme, Professor Adewale Solarin, which was to commemorate his 70th birthday celebration for the vision in championing STEAM education and for putting Ogun State on the world map. I am pledging my full support to this great vision of yours.”
