The Vice-Chancellor of Wesley University Ondo, Rev. Prof. Samuel Sunday Obeka, has urged the institution’s newly admitted students to embrace the qualities of hard work and avoid social vices.
Prof. Obeka, who declared this during the school’s 15th Matriculation ceremony, cautioned that any violation of the social vices would result in severe repercussions such as suspension, expulsion, or prosecution.
The Vice-Chancellor, when giving the oath of allegiance to the 580 students, exhorted them to always adhere to the University’s ideals, rules, and regulations, pushing them to be firm and focused in order to overcome the different challenges they would face throughout their time at the institution.
Obeka said that the university administration will ensure that the students stay in the school remain pleasant, but urged them to manage their time well, shun cultism and imbibe Godliness, hard work and excellence throughout their stay in the university, saying the faith based school has a high level of discipline.
The VC reiterated that the mission of the university was to provide quality education, foster critical thinking, and produce well-rounded graduates who are equipped with the skills and knowledge to contribute meaningfully to society.
He said the authorities of the institution is working towards producing the best among the university in the country, expressing optimism that the school will soon be ranked among the top ten universities in Africa.
He urged the matriculating students to take their lectures seriously; attend classes regularly, actively engage with their lecturers, and seek clarification whenever necessary.
The Vice Chancellor reassured parents and guardians the security of their wards and properties, just as he assured them that the academic calendar of the institution would not be disrupted.
Obeka emphasised that the university had put in place both human and material resources to help them succeed in their studies and other lawful engagements, warning them not to indulge in any untoward behaviours in and outside the school.
He noted that the university is achieving greater academic heights, evidenced by hosting numerous professional bodies and teams, including the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, among others.
He disclosed that the plans have reached advanced stage to expand the institution’s programmes to include, Medicine and Surgery, Human Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacy, Health Information Science, and more postgraduate programmes.
He said the new students spread across colleges studying programmes in natural and applied science, social and management science, environmental design and management. Others include arts, agriculture, food science and technology, health, education and law for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
