ACU expels students for beating colleague to death over ‘stolen phone’

Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) in Oyo has expelled some of its students for beating a colleague to death over an alleged phone theft.

In a now-viral video, the expelled students are shown beating a colleague who is rolling on the floor while one of them shouts “harder, harder”.

The victim was also seen gasping for air as he went numb after being thrashed with sticks.

The incident happened at the Shepherd Inn, which is located on school grounds. The deceased was reportedly beaten between 6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.

In a statement by Femi Atoyebi, its spokesperson, on Sunday, the school management said it has handed all the students involved over to detectives in Oyo state police command for investigation.

In the statement, the private varsity also denied the viral claims that the students involved were members of a secret cult. It also gave the assurance that justice would be served.

“Contrary to what is trending, the university affirms that there is no cultism in the institution, just as the university has zero tolerance for any sort of anti-societal vices and misconduct,” the statement reads in part.

“It is important to stress that the expelled students do not belong to any cult group.

“The university remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring a safe, conducive, peaceful and godly atmosphere for learning.”
