2 university students abducted in Benue, says police

Benue State police reported on Wednesday the kidnapping of two female students from Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi.

According to witnesses, the two students were kidnapped on Saturday night along the road to the institution.

SP Catherine Anene, the public relations officer for the police (PPRO), confirmed the incident to journalists in Makurdi, but did not identify the students’ identities.

Anene did, however, reveal that the event occurred on Saturday night at about 11 p.m. near the North Bank/UniAgric route in Makurdi and did not take place on the university grounds.

She claimed that the abductors blocked the road, captured the victims, and whisked them away before security arrived.

Anene went on to say that the victims’ relatives and school management had alerted the police and that an investigation into the incident had already begun.

Mrs Lucy Iwodi, the Institution’s Deputy Registrar for Information and Public Relations, told journalists when approached that she had yet to get the necessary approval from the school’s authority to comment about the subject.
