The Senate of the University of Abuja has selected Aisha Maikudi, the institution’s youngest professor of Law, as interim vice-chancellor.
Maikudi, a professor of International Law, is the institution’s current Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics.
Her appointment followed her nomination at the valedictory Senate meeting on Wednesday, according to a statement from the outgoing VC, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah.
He stated that Maikudi’s appointment was in an acting role, effective immediately after his tenure as vice-chancellor, and that it was subject to governing council approval.
Na’Allah’s five-year tenure at the institution will end on June 30, 2024.
In her acceptance speech, Maikudi thanked Senate members for their confidence in her.
She said, “I want to extend my deepest respect and appreciation to you all for the strong support and the unwavering commitment that you have accorded me.”
Maikudi was born January 31, 1983. She attended Queens College in Lagos, where she earned her West African Senior School Certificate.
She later attended the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, where she earned an LLB in 2004 and an LLM from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2005.
In 2015, she received a PhD in international law from the University of Abuja.
Maikudi entered the University of Abuja as a Lecturer II on September 4, 2008, and was promoted to professor in 2022.
In 2018, she became the institution’s first female Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Law, and in 2019, she was named the pioneer Director of the University of Abuja International Centre.
Maikudi has attended national and international conferences in the United Kingdom, the United States, South Africa, Germany, Italy, and Egypt, among others. She has also undertaken numerous research projects on United Nations law and written extensively.
She is a member of numerous professional associations, including the Nigerian Bar Association, the Nigerian Law Teachers Association, and the International Federation of Women Lawyers.
