UNIZIK governing council appoints female acting VC




The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, has named Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi as the institution’s new acting Vice Chancellor.

Arinze-Umobi’s appointment came after the former acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joe Ikechebelu, was dismissed from his position during a meeting at the institution’s Council Chambers on Saturday.

Ambassador Gregory Mbadiwe, the University’s pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, stated this in a letter distributed to journalists in Awka on Saturday.

Mbadiwe stated that the six-month appointment is per the provisions of Section 4 of the First Schedule of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act, CAP 139, LFN 2004, as amended by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amended) Act 2007.

He further stated that the appointment is for a minimum of six months, beginning Monday, July 22, 2024, and that “the terms and conditions of your appointment are as approved by the Federal Government for all Federal universities.”

He further stated that a copy of the appointment letter had been given to the Honourable Minister of Education for the Visitor to the University’s knowledge.

He, therefore, called on everyone to express heartfelt congratulations and full support to Arinze-Umobi as she takes on the vital job, adding, “Together, we will write the next chapter in the illustrious history of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.”

The letter which was presented to Umobi read: “Dear Professor Umobi, Appointment as acting Vice-Chancellor Nnamdi Azikiwe University. I am pleased to inform you that in accordance with the provisions of Section 4 of First Schedule, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act CAP 139, LFN 2004 as amended by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amended) Act 2007, the Governing Council has approved your appointment as Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka on the recommendation of the University Senate.

“Your appointment is for a period not later than six (6) months, effective Monday, July 22, 2024. The terms and conditions of your appointment are as approved by the Federal Government for all Federal Universities.

“On behalf of the Governing Council, we extend our warmest congratulations on your appointment. We have full confidence in your ability to lead our esteemed institution during this period and wish you great success in this rule.

“Please note that a copy of this letter is being forwarded to the Honourable Minister of Education for the information of the Visitors to the University. Once again, congratulations on your appointment.”

Meanwhile, it was discovered that prior to the new appointment, there was a large number of security personnel stationed on campus.
