Association tasks Niger Govt. on maintenance of infrastructure in schools




MINNA (Sundiata Scholar) – The Old Boys Association of Government Secondary School Kontagora (GOSSKOBA), Class of 1984, has called on the Niger Government to ensure the periodic maintenance of infrastructure in schools.

Alhaji Aliyu Ahmed, former Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Finance, made the call at the 40th anniversary of Class 1984 in Minna on Saturday.

He also called on the government to adequately fund schools in the state to ensure that facilities were always put in good shape including their alma mater.

He said, “No matter what the alumni do to improve infrastructure in schools, if there is no consistent support from the state government, the situation will deteriorate.”

Ahmed, who is the Chairman of occasion, commended the members of the Class of 1984 for their continuous commitment to uplifting the standard of infrastructure in the school.

In his welcome address, Prof. Idris Abdullahi, Chairman of Class of ’84 of GOSSKOA said the event was to honour some members that have impacted on the school since after graduation.

Abdullahi added that the event was also to unveil and launch the compendium and tributes as well as the 11th consecutive Annual General Meeting.

He commended the members of the association for their contributions, adding that 85 per cent of infrastructural development in the institution was done by the alumni.

Abdulahi revealed that part of the school boundary was completely opened without a fence leaving the school porous and vulnerable to trespassers and other unwanted elements.

He called on the state government and wealthy individuals to support the school through the provision of facilities, learning materials and scholarship for the indigent students.

In a goodwill message, Malam Bala Jido, National President of GOSSKO, commended the Class of 84″ for the foresight to bring together the members with a view of
fostering unity.

He called on other sets of the school to emulate the class in embarking on self-help programmes and projects for the overall growth and development of the school. (NAN)
