Amos Ishaku, a First Class graduate and internally displaced person (IDP) in Uhorgua camp, Edo State, has received a fully financed PhD scholarship from the University of Illinois in Chicago, USA.
In November 2023, Ishaku graduated from Edo State University in Uzaire with a first-class degree in Chemical Engineering.
Pastor Solomon Folorunsho, Coordinator of the Home of the Needy, stated that the development demonstrated that building an enabling environment for the poor can produce outcomes.
The camp currently houses over 4,000 children, most of whom have been displaced from Nigeria’s northeast due to the deadly activities of the notorious Boko Haram insurgency.
Excited Folorunsho said, “This is to let the world and our friends know that the support they are giving to the orphans, widows, displaced people and the vulnerable in our centre is yielding great results.
“Aside those who graduated last year and the ones about to graduate, more than 200 are currently studying in different universities and no fewer than 150 others are processing their admissions into universities.
“We thank you for believing in us and supporting us to do this, as we together celebrate this great success,” Folorunsho said.
Upon graduation, Ishaku received the Best Graduating Student, 2023 honour, the Mike Ozekhome award for overall best-graduating student, and the Best Student award in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
His other awards include Best Student in Entrepreneurship and Faculty of Engineering.
Meanwhile, Folorunsho informed the media that Ishaku would be resuming to the institution later this month.
