The Edo government has completed the recruitment of 5,500 teachers to improve teaching and learning in the state’s basic schools.
Mrs. Ozavize Salami, Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), announced this at a news conference in Benin.
Salami explained that the recruitment was part of an effort to bridge the teacher gap in primary and junior secondary schools.
According to her, the recruitment procedure was demanding, with 19,931 applications received and 16,038 candidates chosen for computer-based examinations and interviews.
“Candidates with skills and expertise relevant to gaps in the school system were selected to fill gaps across all local government areas.
The newly recruited teachers will undergo training and capacity building to ensure they are equipped to deliver quality education,” the chairman said.
Salami claimed that Gov. Obaseki’s dedication to education reform, also known as EdoBEST, had positioned the state as a leader in Nigeria, with a focus on improving learning results for around 400,000 children.
She described the recruitment of 5,500 teachers as an important step towards attaining this goal.
She stated that 1780 EdoSTAR fellows who worked as trainee teachers two years ago were hired as full-time government teachers.
The Edo SUBEB chairman stated that the exercise highlighted the state government’s dedication to investing in its teachers and offering opportunities for growth and development.
She stated that the newly hired teachers had been assigned to schools throughout the state based on the identified gap, to ensure that every child had access to a quality education.
Salami expressed her excitement, saying “We are confident that this recruitment will have a positive impact on teaching and learning in our basic schools.”
