The Plateau State University ASUU to Commence Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the Plateau State University (PLASU) initiated a comprehensive and indefinite strike action that has halted academic activities in the institution.

The university chapter of ASUU released a statement, signed by Comrade Deme Samson Bitrus, the secretary, and chairperson Dr. Hassan Monday Zitta, stating that the strike was a response to the National Executive Council visitation team’s report, which found that the state government had not carried out the second agreement that the union and the government had signed in 2022.

It said that the branch’s request to resume its suspended strike had been approved by the ASUU National President, and that Congress had then declared a complete strike in response to the decision.

The statement outlines the points of concern as being the state government’s insufficient capital projects, the availability of more dorm rooms, the tarring and finishing of the campus road network, and the provision of staff quarters.

The completion of the university’s perimeter fence and the establishment of a long-lasting, functioning training policy with funding set aside for visiting scholars’ instruction are among the other needs.
