ATBU extends resumption date after shutdown over student’s death

After calling an emergency meeting in the Senate Chamber of the Gubi Campus, the Senate of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has resolved to postpone the undergraduate semester till January 7, 2024.

The administration of the university had first said that all undergraduate students would not be able to attend classes from December 4–10, 2023, for a week.

In order to avoid any possible disturbances of the peace and order on the campuses of Yelwa and Gubi, this decision was made.

The choice to prolong the closure was made in response to student agitation that followed the unfortunate event in which a fellow student died in Yelwan Ngas, a neighbourhood of Bauchi, after being attacked by unknown assailants.

In a statement, the Director of Information and Public Relations, Lalhaji Zailani Bappah, confirmed the student’s tragic death.
