On Wednesday, January 10, a Federal High Court in Abuja granted Prof. Cyril Ndifon, the suspended Dean of the University of Calabar’s Faculty of Law, interim bail so he could have glaucoma surgery.

The embattled professor was initially placed under arrest on Tuesday at the Kuje Correctional Facility.

Justice James Omotosho gave the order following an application by Ndifon’s counsel, Okon Efut, SAN, which was not opposed by Osuobeni Akponimisingha, lawyer to Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC.

Judge Omotosho granted Ndifon N250 million in bail, contingent on a surety swearing to an affidavit of means and registering his or her passport with the court registry.

The judge stated that he had taken Ndifon’s oral bail application into consideration.

The judge further stipulated that the temporary bail would remain in place from January 10 to January 25, when Ndifon’s attorney’s formal bail request would be heard.

The matter was consequently adjourned until Jan. 25 and January 26 for the continuation of trial and hearing of the bail application.
